IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William J.
Ernst
March 26, 1937 – August 16, 2025
William J. Ernst, 88, of Allentown, passed away peacefully at Legend of Allentown, surrounded by love and family. He was the beloved husband of Marcia V. (Greenlay) Ernst, with whom he shared a lifetime of devotion, laughter, and unwavering companionship.
Born in Allentown and raised on a farm in Ironton, Bill was the son of the late Frank and Virginia (Young) Ernst. He was a proud graduate of Parkland High School, and shortly after graduating, he answered the call to serve his country. Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran and remained deeply proud of his service throughout his life.
Following his military service, Bill embarked on a 40-year career with Asplundh Tree Expert Company, retiring as a General Foreman. A dedicated and respected leader, he brought both discipline and kindness to his work—and to everything he did.
Bill was a pillar of his community, especially through his lifelong involvement with the Alton Park Youth League. As a coach, officer, and the beloved "Snack Stand Man," he helped shape not only young athletes, but also community spirit. He was even one of the first to introduce a food truck concept, bringing energy, creativity, and fun to the field.
In retirement, Bill discovered a deep love for cooking. He served for many years as the cherished chef at Stortz & Associates during tax season, preparing home-cooked lunches and dinners with warmth and care. From kiffels to wienerschnitzel to spätzle and SPAM, his Austrian specialties were both delicious and deeply rooted in family tradition.
Bill was also a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he and Marcia found joy and fellowship volunteering at the annual bazaar. His hobbies were a reflection of his generous, playful nature: birdwatching, woodworking, laughing, shopping on QVC, and joyfully driving his little red truck. But above all else, his greatest passion was his family. He lived every day with his wife and children at the heart of his world, and his legacy of love lives on in all of them.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia E. Ernst, wife of Paul Oswald; Deborah E. Ernst; Jon M. Ernst and wife Linda T. Ernst; and Jennifer E., wife of Carl T. McGuckin. He is also survived by his brothers, Frank Ernst and wife Robyn, and Albert Ernst and wife Connie; his sister, Jean, widow of Harold Clay; twelve grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 29 at 11:00 AM at Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main Street, Emmaus, with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley, 4501 Crackersport Rd, Allentown, PA 18104.
Bill brought joy into the world every single day—through laughter, food, kindness, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and generosity that will live on in every heart he touched.
