Obituary

Russel L. Schantz, 85, of Emmaus, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, at Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was the husband of Sandra R. (Grill) Schantz, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Born in Hosensack, he was the son of the late Lester and Pauline (Lichtenwalner) Schantz.

Russel was a lifelong farmer whose dedication to the land reflected his steady work ethic, humility, and deep-rooted faith. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Macungie, where he joyfully sang in the choir since he was 10 years old. Russel also plowed snow at the church for 25 years. He was a founding member and later member emeritus of the Macungie Minstrelaires, sharing his voice and fellowship with the community.

He was also a member of the Macungie Grange and participated in FFA during his years at Upper Perkiomen High School, interests that reflected his lifelong commitment to agriculture. In recognition of his generous spirit, Russel was honored as Volunteer of the Year by Good Shepherd, and a star was named in his honor. Russel volunteered at the Das Awkscht Fescht and Wheels of Time for many years. He was a Phillies and NASCAR fan and didn’t miss watching the games or races. He was a longtime supporter of Shamrock women’s softball while Sandy was playing.

Russel is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra; daughters, Dana, wife of Robert Clauser, and Lynn, wife of Scott Geschel; grandchildren, Lauren, wife of Robert Marra; Linsey, wife of Dan Nicholas; Kaylee, wife of Benjamin Kerchner; Merritt Geschel; and Matthew Geschel; and great-grandchildren, Samuel, Adalyn, and Sadie. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis, wife of Harold Serfass, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Diane Schantz; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Warren Schantz.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 28 W. Main St., Macungie, PA 18062. A viewing will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the church. Interment will follow at Solomon’s Union Cemetery. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is entrusted with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or to the Macungie Minstrelaires, P.O. Box 67, Macungie, PA 18062.
