Ron was a graduate of Taylor High School, East Stoudsburg State Teachers College, Lehigh University and also attended Penn State University, Villanova University and San Diego State University for graduate studies.
An avid tennis player Ron looked forward to joining friends on the courts every Wednesday and Friday and then going to breakfast at the Brass Rail. He loved to watch tennis as well as play and always dreamed of seeing all of the major tennis tournaments. Ron went to the US Open for over 25 years, later he traveled to the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. One of his favorite tournaments was the BNP Paribas held in Indian Wells, California where he looked forward to watching his favorite players up close. He also enjoyed watching players at the Miami Open.
Ron loved to walk and ride his bike. Neighbors always knew him by the way he walked and laughed when they saw him walking backwards up or down a hill. He disliked going to the beach but loved walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. He was often seen walking or biking 10-15 miles ever day when he was there. Ron was a great shopper and loved buying gifts for family members. He was happy to spend an afternoon at the mall and eating a hot dog at Dunderback's or Yocco's. Ron and Carol enjoyed traveling across the country and also visited many countries. A people person, Ron always found someone he knew and enjoyed talking to them wherever he was. Ron also loved animals and until recently always had a dog in the house. He loved Elsa, Miss Mittens, Snickers and especially Jingles and Jitterbug.
Ron served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954-56.
He began his teaching career as a science teacher in the East Penn School District in 1956. Later he became assistant principal of Emmaus Junior High School, Eyer Junior High School and Emmaus High School. He also worked as acting principal of Shoemaker Elementary School. Ron disliked going to meetings but was always available to chaperone dances or attend school functions. He learned the names of thousands of students during his 37 year career and was always happy when students remembered him with invitations to reunions or other events. Wherever Ron went he knew several people and was always the center of conversations. He called former students when he needed work done at his home and they always referred to him as Mr. Rieder. When he called they came.
Ron was a member of the Pennsylvania Association School Principals (PAASP) and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). He was a firm believer in membership in the Smithsonian Institute and the National Parks Association. Ron visited almost all of the national parks in his lifetime.
