Obituary

Paul F. Kunkel, 94, formerly of Emmaus, died Dec. 8, 2020 in Lehigh Valley Hospital.  He was the husband of the late Doris L. (Leh) Kunkel, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.  Born in Kutztown, he was the son of the late Anthen N. and Alma (Barner) Kunkel.  He was a 1943 graduate of Kutztown High School and a 1950 graduate of Lehigh University, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.  He honorably served his country as a 1 st Sgt. in the Army in the Pacific Theater during WWII.  Paul was a Professional Engineer and licensed surveyor.  He worked as the Director of Engineering at Lehigh Valley Dairy for 20 years and later was a consulting engineer and partner of McTish, Kunkel and Associates until retiring.  He was a life member and past president of the L.V Chapter P.S.P.E. and a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  Paul was a member of Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church, where he served as president of Joint Council in 1960 and 1964, past teenage Sunday School teacher for 27 years, and past Senior Bible Class teacher for 50 years.  He was active in the masonic fraternity and member and Past Master of Lehigh Lodge #326 F&AM, Past District Deputy Grand Master of District #10 Lehigh County, Past Thrice Potent Master of Muhlenberg Lodge of Perfection, where he was corneted his 33 Degree in 1974, Past Commander-in-Chief Lehigh Consistory, and Past Chairman G.L. Committee – Masonic Temple, Halls, and Lodge Rooms.  Paul was proud of his PA German heritage and served as Past President of the PA German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University, Past Haaptmon Grundsow Lodge #13, Emmaus, Past Haaptmon Unner Lechaw Kounty Fersommling, and Past Schulmeeschder GSL sponsored PA German Schools.

Paul is survived by his son, Douglas C. Kunkel and wife Bonnie of Renton, WA; daughter, Nanette C. wife of Robert Dudley of Cottonwood Heights, UT; grandchildren, Christopher and Elizabeth Dudley; niece, Lenora Dannelke; nephew, Glenn Berger.
