Miriam R. Schantz Miriam R. Schantz, 92, died at Mosser Nursing home Oct. 1, 2010. Miriam lived in Emmaus, the oldest of four children of Norman and Ella Schantz. She graduated from Emmaus High School and Allentown Business School and worked at Bethlehem Steel Company for 44 years. All her life, her weekends were spent bird watching with many friendslocally watching migrations, north and south. Identification of birds by shape, color, and song was part of her nature skills. After retirement she traveled throughout the United States, including Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America, Antarctica and Iceland. To her family and friends she would send extensive trip journals. Her sizeable collection of books include bird and nature topics from all over the world. She was a member of Zions Evangelical Lutheran Church, Old Zionsville, the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Audubon Society, Hawk Mountain Association, PA Society for Ornithology, and Longwood Gardens. Her legacy of planting thousands of daffodils remain. Survivors: Sister, Ruth and husband Placido Fortino; Brother, Richard and wife Monica; Brother Daniel, deceased. Nieces, Sally, Lucy, Victoria Fortino and Susanna Schantz, and spouses Don Killen, Sue Sherry, and Lee Morrissey. Services: A private service will be held for the immediate family.
