Karen A. Hertzog Karen A. Hertzog, 53, of Emmaus, died October 5, 2007 in her home. She was the wife of Larry J. Underkoffler. They celebrated their 10th anniversary in August 2007. Born in Bethlehem, she was the daughter of Garrett R. Smith of Bethlehem and the late Frances M. (Unger) Smith. She was an owner/trainer of South Mountain Dog Training Center since September of 1994. Karen was a dog trainer since 1978, first part time for Allentown Dog Training Club. In 1988 Karen became a licensed AKC Obedience Judge, judging obedience trials throughout the country. She showed her dogs in conformation and obedience since 1977. In the mid to late 1990s, Karen became a certified Therapy Dog Evaluator. Her dogs throughout the years were certified therapy dogs where they lit up the lives of people in nursing homes, rehab centers, cancer wards, etc. She raised puppies for the Seeing Eye. She sponsored a dog blood drive at her home 4 times a year from 1990 through 2004. She learned to tattoo dogs to protect them when lost or stolen. She was a member in good standing in many different clubs but nearest to her heart were the Irish Setter Club of America and Make Peace with Greyhound Rescue. Karens whole adult life was dedicated to the welfare of dogs and training of the owner to train their dogs.
