Obituary

John J. Speer, 90, of Old Zionsville, died Sept. 7, 2018 in Lehigh Valley Hospital.  He was the husband of Mary Ellen A. (Moyer) Speer, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.  Born in Glenside, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary E. (Stark) Speer.  John was a 1946 graduate of Allentown High School.  He honorably served his country in the Marine Corps. during WWII.  He worked for H. Leh and Company from 1948 – 1950, Underwood Corporation from 1950 – 1955 as typewriter repairs and sales, and Merchants National Bank from 1955 until retiring in 1989 as V.P. of Commercial Loans.  He was a charter member of Lower Lehigh Lions Club, serving as president in 1968, member of Allentown Lions Club in 1984, Board Member of the Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, Advisory Board Member of the Better Business Bureau, Member and Treasurer of the Lehigh County Historical Society, and was a member of Emmaus Lodge #792 F&AM and Lehigh Consistory.  John was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; Daughters, Carol S. Hindle of Atlantic Beach, FL and Barbara A. Speer of Royersford; Grandchildren, Sarah Hindle, Matt Brown, and Brian Brown.  He was predeceased by a Sister, Margaret Kern.

Graveside Services will be held on Wed., Sept. 12, 2018 at 11:00 AM in in Grandview Cemetery, Allentown. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements.
