Obituary

John S. "Jack" Hayes, 84, of Emmaus, died peacefully January 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Marianne DiSalvo Hayes. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Stanley J. and Anna M. (Brett) Hayes. Jack was a 1950 graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School and was inducted into the school's football Hall of Fame in 2010. He was a 1954 graduate of Villanova University and a 1959 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He served in the US Navy and Naval Reserve for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander . After working as Corporate Counsel for Lehigh Portland Cement, Jack entered private practice with his own firm of Hayes & Feege. His career took him to various positions in government and government relations. Jack served as a seminar leader in labor and employment relations for Penn State University, Legal Assistant to the Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board and as a political coordinator for national and state political campaigns. Jack's many accolades include being named in The Best Lawyers in America for over 20 years under Labor and Employment Law; recognized in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of AV Pre-eminent Lawyers and the National Registry of Who's Who. Jack was an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Emmaus, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, commentator, and was a member of the Parish Council for many years. He was a member of the SERRA Club. Jack served as past president of the Diocese of Allentown Board of Education, the President's Council of DeSales University, the Executive Committee of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Lehigh Valley Advisory Board to PNC Bank, was counsel to the Eastern PA Emergency Medical Society, and was past president of the Industrial Relations Research Association of Northeastern PA. Jack was a member of the American Arbitration Association, the American, Federal, Pennsylvania, and Lehigh County Bar Associations and was an active participant in committee work in all of these associations. He was a coach of Catholic Youth Organization basketball teams, and a member of numerous social organizations including the Emmaus Rotary Club, Moselem Springs Golf Club, and Lehman Lake Rod and Gun Club. Jack was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

In addition to his beloved wife of 61 years, Marianne D. Hayes, he is survived by his children, daughters, Kathleen (William) Taylor, Teresa (Richard) O'Flynn, Anne (Louis) DeVoto, and son, John Hayes. His grandchildren; Maureen (Matthew) Vitris, Meghan Taylor, Allison Hayes, Thomas DeVoto, Emily DeVoto, Richard O'Flynn and Caroline DeVoto. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann (Hayes) Donnelly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann Catholic Church, 415 S. Sixth St., Emmaus. Viewing Friday 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main St., Emmaus and Saturday 9:45 to 10:45 AM in the church. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Ann Catholic Church and School, 415 S. Sixth St., Emmaus, PA 18049 or to the Emmaus Ambulance Corps, 100 N. Sixth St., Emmaus, PA 18049.
