Obituary

Jean Caroline Butz Stoneback, of Alburtis, PA died September 2 at Lehigh Center, Macungie, PA, in the company of family. She was 90. Beloved by a generation of youngsters and their parents who knew her as Aunt Lillie, the Storybook Lady for her weekly sessions in area malls, Jean was a long-time newspaper columnist. From My Kitchen Window ran each week in The East Penn Press and its predecessor papers from the 1960s until her death. Over the Wash Line has been a regular feature in Town & Country for many years. Jean wrote and self-published a number of books and cook books including: Peteys Years , From Aunt Lillies Pantry Shelf , Tales of Baldy Mountain and Mr. Spring . She edited Bye-Gone Days and Country Cookery to benefit the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society, of which she was a founding member. With Gene Weisbecker she wrote 333 Easy-to-Build Fun Projects for Your Home , published by Tab Books in 1981. She received numerous awards from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association including one for Getting Ready , a recounting of her practical pre-planning of her funeral by obtaining the perfect head stone at a discount rate and having a carpenter prepare a simple wooden box for her cremated remains. The illustration on the headstone is that of a lady in an old-fashioned costume with a book in her hand and children and animals at her feet. The younger daughter of the late Robert Fleming Butz and Caroline Paiste Butz, she was a life-long resident of Alburtis except for a brief period as a newly-wed. Jean graduated from Emaus High School in 1938, attended Cedar Crest College for a year and completed her education at the Ambler School of Horticulture, now part of Temple University. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Dalton W. Rocky Stoneback. They had four children: Scott, Hope (DeIaco), Brent and Faith (Andrews) who all settled near her with their own families. Due to Jeans persuasion, Lehigh County purchased the former Thomas Iron Works site in Alburtis and developed Lock Ridge Park, which was dedicated in 1976. For 17 years she was the tour guide, retelling tales that the old iron workers had shared with her. There she inaugurated the annual May Day celebration and held a variety of festivals every spring, summer and fall. She also wrote and produced a series of holiday plays for the Lockridge Theater group. Into her late 80s she presented shows for community groups and nursing homes, based on her growing up memories during the Great Depression, incorporating antiques that had once been integral to the tasks of everyday life. She acted in several segments of The Forensic Files and television commercials. Jean was a guiding force of the Alburtis Camp Fire chapter, which her mother had founded. During Jeans leadership in the 1950s, the Dad Daughter Association obtained a donated parcel from James Geissinger and built a cabin which is still used for meetings and fundraisers. In the 1990s she received The Community Spirit Award from the Morning Call newspaper for her volunteer efforts and strong commitment to preserving and maintaining the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley. She was a Justice of the Peace in the 1960s and a member of the Womens Writers Workshop until her death. Beyond her family, Jeans first love was animals. For many years she kept goats, chickens, ducks and bees as well as dogs and cats. She was an active and enthusiastic gardener and a great home-style cook and baker. In addition to her children and their spouses, Jean is survived by nine grandchildren and eight-great-grandchildren.
