Frank J. Schneider, 100, of Allentown, died May 25, 2025 in Luther Crest. He was the husband of Theresia (Schuhmacher) Schneider. Born in Bonn, Germany, he was the son of the late Joseph and Christine (Friedrichs) Schneider.
He attended a Catholic school and was also an altar boy at the affiliated church, the Muensterkirche. He belonged to a Catholic youth group until 1939 when his parents received a note instructing them to send him to join the Hitler Youth.
In 1940 he began an electrician's apprenticeship in Bonn, Germany. In 1942 he had to enter the German army which sent him to the Russian front in Poltava, Ukraine. After a few weeks he was wounded and a Ukrainian soldier helped him return home to recover. He was wounded 2 more times. His final injury came a few weeks before the end of the war when he was hit by a Russian sniper. Despite the chaos and collapse of order throughout Europe he was saved.
After WWII he became a journeyman electrician helping to rebuild Germany. In 1952 his mother's cousin in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania sponsored him to immigrate to America. He was very proud to pass the citizenship test on August 27, 1957, and became a citizen of the United States.
In 1959 Frank married a German refugee from Yugoslavia who had lost her home and some of her family when the Russians 'liberated' her hometown.
Frank worked as a mechanic for Pfizer pharmaceutical company in Brooklyn, New York while enrolled in evening classes at RCA Institutes where he studied radio, television, and industrial electronics. During the height of the cold war, he worked as a radar technician for RCA in Alaska at the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System.
Frank then got a job with RCA as a Field Engineer in New Jersey for a few years before transferring to Information International Inc. in Allentown where he worked on computer type-setting systems until retiring in 1990.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Emmaus. He was a member of Coplay Saengerbund and LVCG Computer Club of Allentown.
Frank is survived by his wife of 66 years, Theresia; son, James Schneider and wife Natalia; grandchildren, Victoria, David, and Michael. He was predeceased by sisters, Theresia Schneider and Regina Schneider.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements.
