Obituary

Fenton M. Hanchett, 90, a resident of Allentown, PA, having recently moved from Syracuse, NY, passed away of natural causes on Monday, August 19, 2013 at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest. Fenton was born in Oneida, NY to William and Wyntja (Hill) Hanchett; the oldest of four children. After a childhood spent in Massapequa, NY, Fenton returned to the Syracuse, NY area and earned a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University. He served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 as an aviation electronic technician's mate. On July 21, 1950 Fenton married Joan Minikhiem of Syracuse. Together, they raised 6 children and opened their home to 3 more children through the American Field Service. Throughout his life, he was involved in his local church, most recently serving as an elder in the Howlett Hill (NY) Presbyterian Church. Fenton enjoyed a 43 year career with Allied Chemical Corporation, starting in the laboratory and finishing as a vice-president at the corporate headquarters. Recognized as an expert in the Solvay process for manufacturing soda ash, he managed manufacturing plants in Amherstburg, Ontario, Baltimore, MD, and Solvay, NY before retiring in 1984and returning to the Syracuse area. Fenton was an honorable man with many talents and hobbies. He loved to jog, bike, hike and camp with his family. He enjoyed golf and travel, birds and flowers, woodworking and photography. Fenton was an amazing artist, capturing the beauty of God's creation on any medium with pastels, acrylics, charcoal and pen and ink. In retirement, Fenton devoted his efforts to the Camillus (NY) Erie Canal Park. He created beautiful flower gardens there and was instrumental in the restoration of the 1844 Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct. Fenton also served as director of the Canal Society of New York State. He will be remembered as a man of integrity. Survivors: Fenton is survived by his six children: one daughter, Marjorie Sapp of Fort Wayne, IN and five sons: Keith Hanchett of Emmaus, PA and his wife Jamie. William Hanchett of Poughkeepsie, NY and his wife, Karen; Steven Hanchett of Colorado Springs, CO and his wife Valerie; Gregg Hanchett of Greenville, SC and his wife, Donna; and Douglas Hanchett of Long Valley, NJ and his wife, Pamela. He also loved his 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Fenton is also survived by 2 sisters: Jeannette Gardner of Westmont, NJ and Nancy Krick of Avon, NY. Fenton was predeceased by his wife, Joan, a sister, Lorraine Crouse of Herkimer, NY, a son-in-law Michael Sapp of Fort Wayne, IN and one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Services: A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, August 24 at the Schantz Funeral Home P.C. 250 Main St. Emmaus, PA. There will be no visiting hours. Contributions: The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Camillus Canal Society, Inc. at 12 King Courts, Apt. 6, Camillus, NY 13031.
