Obituary

With sadness, we announce the loss of Donald J. Krauss, 86, a Navy Veteran and longtime resident of Pensacola, Florida. Don took his place among the angels on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, peacefully and comfortably in Covenant Care at Sacred Heart Hospital. Don was born in Emmaus, PA to the late Arthur D. and Mae A. (Stortz) Krauss. He was a 1954 graduate of Emmaus High School and briefly studied at Penn State University before he enlisted in the Navy. Upon retiring from an 32 year Naval career in 1987, Don served his veteran shipmates and their families by volunteering 25 years at Naval Air Station Pensacola in the Retired Activities Office, a department of the Fleet and Family Support Center. He also continued in his service by joining the Fleet Reserve Association, Mark A. Kilgore Branch 22.

Don retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. His last 2 years in the service were as Commanding Officer of the Transient Personnel Unit at NAS Cubi Point in the Philippines. His meritorious service while assigned at the Pentagon in the early 1980's as a Special Project Admin/Control Officer, involving the highest level of government, earned him a Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He was acknowledged for his professional expertise, consistent outstanding performance, and total dedication to duty, which directly enhanced the National Security of the United States. Throughout his career, Don also received three Navy Commendation Medals, a Navy Meritorious Service Medal, and the RVN Gallantry Cross earned during service in Vietnam waters.

During his retirement years in Pensacola, Don enjoyed many leisure activities within his community. He was an avid concertgoer and supporter of all fine arts, lover of a good meal in the company of friends, spent time with his grandchildren, and chose to always see the good in things while living life to the fullest. He was a kind, generous, and loving soul who impacted the lives of those around him. Don is survived by his wife Lany Krauss, two daughters, Donna Krauss and Laura Ellis (Krauss) (Mark), sister Rev. Margaret Hassler, and three loving grandchildren:  Amanda, Morgan, and Mae. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Hutter, and a Brother, Richard Krauss.

Don will be laid to rest Monday, April 17th at 1:30pm in the Barrancas National Cemetery in honor of his service to the Navy and the United States.
