Bowie, Jr.
June 2, 1921 – December 2, 2016
Donald S. Bowie, Jr., 95, of Emmaus, passed away in his sleep on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 at Luther Crest of Allentown. He was the husband of the late Anita (Deschenes) Bowie, to whom he was married for 65 years. Donald Smith Bowie was born June 2, 1921 in Long Branch, NJ to Donald and Mildred (Woolley) Bowie. He graduated Long Branch High School and Monmouth Jr. College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in 1943, prior to serving for three years in the United States Army during WWII, including service in Europe with the 42 nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal. Upon return to the United States, he earned a Jurist Doctorate Degree from Harvard University Law School. While in law school, he met his future wife, Anita, a nurse in Boston. Following graduation from law school, he practiced law for eight years at the Newark, NJ firm of McCarter, English, and Studer. He left in 1956 to join Mack Trucks, Inc. in Plainfield, NJ where he assisted in the development of a corporate legal department, a trend at the time. While first at Mack, the Bowies resided in Westfield and then Glen Rock, NJ. In 1965 when Mack Trucks moved its world headquarters to Allentown, he relocated his family to Emmaus, PA. During his years at Mack, he served as an Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary, as well as a director. He was also an officer and director of several Mack Truck subsidiary companies. In 1986, Mr. Bowie retired from Mack Trucks after 30 years of service. Mr. Bowie was also a member of the Lehigh Industrial Development Authority for twenty years and served as its chairperson for eight. Donald was also active in the Allentown Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Directors of the PA Chamber of Commerce, the American Society of Corporate Secretaries, various bar associations, as well as being involved in several civic and charitable organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at his home on Long Beach Island, playing golf, and extensive traveling during his retirement.
Survivors: Daughters, Barbara B. wife of Barry L. Kulakowsky of Douglassville and Ann B. wife of Richard T. Fox of Emmaus; 6 Grandchildren, Lisa Paretti, Peter Kulakowsky, Natalie Chase, Bruce Fox, Tim Fox, and Maria Fox; 7 Great Grandchildren, Penelope Fox, Grace Kulakowsky, Chloe Paretti, Brodie Kulakowsky, Bowie Fox, Ethan Paretti, and Elliot Chase. He was predeceased by a son, D. Bruce Bowie and a sister, Frances M. Bowie.
Services: Funeral Services Fri., Dec. 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM in First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, 3231 Tilghman St., Allentown. Visitation 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM in the church. Interment will follow in Western Salisbury Cemetery. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements.
