Obituary

David R. Aten, 94, of Macungie, passed away peacefully Feb. 25, 2026 at Phoebe Allentown. He was the husband of Judith A. (Heyer) Aten. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Robert I. and Mary C. (Fritch) Aten. Dave was a 1950 graduate of Emmaus High School and a 1954 graduate of Penn State University. He honorably served his country in the Army from 1954-1956, stationed in Würzburg, Germany. He then started his career working at Aten Hardware. Later he worked for Nationwide Insurance for 10 years and then owned and operated Aten Insurance Agency, working as an insurance broker and certified life underwriter for 20 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Macungie. Dave was an active member of the Emmaus Lions Club and served District 14K as District Governor and State Council Chair. He was also an active member of Lehigh Lodge #326 F&AM and Lehigh Day Lodge #813 F&AM, and member of the Lehigh Consistory, Rajah Shrine, High 12 Club, and the Hillbillies. Dave was a founding member and past president of the Macungie Ambulance Corps, member of the Macungie Fire Company, Macungie VFW, TPA, and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking and jigsaw puzzles.

David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judith; sons, Byron Aten and wife Denise and J. Douglas Aten; daughter, Rebecca wife of Dan Amidon; stepson, Andrew Whitaker and wife Kim; stepdaughter, Angela wife of James Itterly; grandchildren, Danika wife of Alex Kyriakos, Veronica wife of Ryan Taylor, and Victoria; great grandson, Chase Taylor; step grandchildren, Marissa and Jared Itterly, Emily and Darien Whitaker; brother, Richard Aten and wife Susan. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Leer.

Graveside services will be held on May 15, 2026 at 11 AM in Solomon’s Union Cemetery, Macungie. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements.
