Obituary

Pastor Charles M. Kern Pastor Charles M. Kern, 91, passed away June 21, 2008 in Lehigh Commons, Macungie. Born in Quakertown, on Feb. 23, 1917 and raised in Hamburg, he was the son of the late Rev. Rufus E. and Florence (Haring) Kern and the late stepmother Florence (Moser) Kern. Charles was married to the late Kathryn (Rau) Kern for 63 years until her death in 2002. Pastor Kern graduated from Muhlenberg College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Philadelphia and was ordained in 1942. During his 55 active years as a Lutheran (Evangelical Lutheran Synod) minister, he had 2 parish residences: Ringtown and North Wales. His predominant years were spent serving the Lehigh Valley. These were St. Johns Lutheran Church, 5th Street, Allentown; Western Salisbury and Cetronia Union Churches; Topton Lutheran Home Chaplainship, and finally interim pastor of St. Peters Union Church, Macungie until retirement and where he retained his membership. Pastor Kerns special interests were swing and jazz music; his cherished rescued pets, visiting the New Tripoli Farm animals, and was an avid sports enthusiast. Charles was a tennis player and played volleyball at the Allentown YMCA until age 80. Survivors: Son, William Timothy Kern and wife Faye of Clearwater, FL; Daughters, Karen wife of Ronald Powell of Alexandria, VA and Ann Kern-Mangold wife of Marshall Mangold; Sister, Anna (Kern) widow of James Moyer of Newport News, VA; Grandchildren, Troy and Ryan Kern and Desiree Anderson, all of Virginia, and Charles Powell of Maryland; Great Grandchildren, Timothy, Morgan, and Mariella, all of Virginia. He was predeceased by his wife Kathryn (Rau) Kern, Brown University graduate and Reading Specialist for Parkland School District; Brother, Rufus Kern, Jr.; Sister, Virginia (Kern) Shollenberger and husband Rev. Norman Shollenberger. Services: Funeral Services Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM in St. Peters Union Church, 7863 St. Peters Road, Macungie. Friends may call 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the church. Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery, Hamburg. Schantz Funeral Home, inc., Emmaus is in charge of arrangements. Special thanks to the loving assistance both Charles and Kathryn received over the years from the late Aunt Doris Hiller and her recently deceased sister, Betty Jane BJ Wagner. They were of great support to Ann Kern, of New Tripoli, in the care of her parents. Ann Kern would especially like to thank the Lehigh Commons Staff and LVH Hospice Staff for their compassionate care of her father; and for the loving prayers of St. Peters congregation on behalf of Kathryn and Charles over the years, thank you all.
