Obituary

Charles William Crompton, 93 of Macungie, died Dec. 29.  He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Emma Lorine Daughtridge Crompton. Born November 6, 1928 in Gallatin, PA. Charles was the son of the late Fred Crompton Sr. and Della Adamson Crompton.  He is survived by his son, Bill and his wife Eileen, son Donald, daughter Terri, and son Paul and his wife Sue. Charles is also survived by his younger sister, Grace Crompton Irey whom he lovingly adored. He was predeceased by his brothers Fred Crompton Jr., Marion George Crompton, sisters Eva Crompton Straughn, and Lois Crompton Thompson.

"Straws" Crompton as he was known as a kid, grew up as a somewhat precocious child with a penchant for chucking rocks at teachers and administrators alike during his elementary school years.  A child of the Great Depression, he carried a "Waste not want not" attitude all through his life and was instilled with a very strong work ethic; often working two jobs for most of his adult life. At a young age, Charles developed skills as a machinist which served him well when he enlisted and proudly served 4 years in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He loved telling stories of the times he shared with friends he made while serving on an aircraft carrier, the USS Saipan (CVL-48). This was one of the happiest times of his life. A great deal of that happiness stemmed from the fact that during this time he met the love of his life, Emma Lorine Daughtridge, of Rocky Mount, NC.

In 1960, Charles Lorine and their four children moved to Levittown, PA, where Charles was employed by US Steel Fairless Works. He spent 32 years laboring predominately in the "Open Hearth" and helping pioneer development of "Electric Furnaces." After retiring he and Lorine spent many years at their beautiful mountainside retreat in Fort Loudon, PA. He was an active member of the Mercersburg Sportsman Association, receiving the Sportsman of the Year Award. In his later years, moving to his home in Macungie, PA Charles was able to enjoy Sunday dinners, family outings, and nice, long naps. Not much of a traveler after his Navy years, he derived the greatest pleasure in his life by just being with his 4 children, 15 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren. A man of simple tastes, his favorite cut of beef was a hamburger steak smothered in gravy and onions accompanied by a cold beer. He was an avid Phillies fan to the end despite his extreme disappointment in their inability to assemble a serviceable bull pen.

Charles was a proud member of the Macungie VFW Post 9264 where he attended monthly meetings enjoying the company of many friends while serving as Trustee. Sunday was a day for worship at the Lehigh Valley Baptist Church in Emmaus. Charles was a man with few needs, displaying a big heart and was happiest wearing his dungarees and suspenders. Known for his quiet demeanor in large groups, school children and beloved nieces, and nephews were drawn to this kind, big-hearted man known for his wit, stories of adventure on "the high seas" and "pull my finger."
